Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French reclusage ; recluse n., -age suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Anglo-Norman and Middle French reclusage (13th cent. in Old French) < reclus recluse adj. + -age -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin reclusagium (from 1219 in British sources). In sense 2 probably independently < recluse n. + -age suffix.
rare.
1. A hermitage, a place of seclusion. (Only recorded in the works of Caxton.) Obsolete.
