Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French rochaille, rocaille.
Etymology: Probably < French rochaille rocks collectively (1611 in Cotgrave), variant of rocaille mass of small stones (1658; earliest in sense ‘rocky terrain’ (end of the 14th cent. in Middle French as roquailles , plural)) < roc rock n.1 + -aille -al suffix1.
Mining. Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern).
1. Loose stone fragments; gravel. Also: loose gravelly subsoil. Now rare.
