Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Hindi bhiṇḍī okra, and partly (in β. forms) < Marathi bheṇḍī okra, (now also) portia tree, both < a suffixed form of Sanskrit bhiṇḍā okra, of uncertain origin. The flowers of the portia tree resemble those of okra, and (in Western botany) both plants were also formerly taken to be of the same genus ( Hibiscus). The following shows a (rare and now obsolete) parallel borrowing (in sense 2) of Marathi bheṇḍā okra (directly < Sanskrit bhiṇḍā):1813 J. Forbes Oriental Mem. I. ii. 32 The banda (hibiscus esculentus, Linn.) is a nutritious oriental vegetable.
