Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Marathi. Partly a borrowing from Rajasthani. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Nepali. Etymons: Marathi rāṇī; Rajasthani rāṇī; Hindi rānī; Nepali rānī.
Etymology: Partly < Marathi rāṇī and Rajasthani rāṇī, and partly (in later use) < Hindi rānī and Nepali rānī, all ultimately < Sanskrit rājñī , feminine of rājan raja n.1 Compare earlier raja n.1 and Rana n.
