Forms: 1500s–1800s bangue, 1600s–1800s bang, 1800s bhang; (also 1600s bange, 1600s–1700s banque, 1700s bank, 1800s beng, benj, bhung).

Etymology: A word widely spread in Eastern languages: in Urdu, and various Indian languages, bhāng, bhang, bhung; in Persian, bang (whence Arabic banj, benj); all from Sanskrit bhaṅgā hemp. Its first European form was the Portuguese bangue, also the earliest form in English; bang (representing the Persian) has prevailed since c1675; bhang became frequent during the 19th century, and is etymologically preferable.

1. The native name of the Indian variety of the common Hemp, which in warm countries develops narcotic and intoxicating properties. In India the leaves and seed-capsules are chewed or smoked, or eaten mixed up into a sweetmeat, and sometimes an infusion of them is drunk. The name is sometimes extended to an intoxicating substance prepared from the resinous exudation of the plant, called by the Arabs hashish.
