Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rengaille.
Etymology: < Old French rengaille, ringaille, etc., dregs of an army, camp followers (1155) < renge (see range n.1) + -aille (see -al suffix1). Compare rangat n.The word is apparently not attested in French later than the 13th cent., and is not found in any period in sense 1.
Chiefly Scottish.
