Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French randanite, randannite.

Etymology: < French randanite (E. Salvétat 1848, in Ann. de chimie et physique 24 352), also randannite (see below), apparently < Randan , the name of a small town in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in central France, where the earth is found + -ite -ite suffix¹. The rarer French form randannite (suggested as an emendation by A. Des Cloizeaux Manuel de minéralogie II. (1874) p. ix) suggests association with Randanne, another smaller place in the same department, where more abundant deposits of the earth occur.

Mineralogy. rare.

A diatomaceous earth resembling kaolin.Randannite is a variety of tripolite.
