Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish ranchero.
Etymology: < Spanish ranchero person who farms or works on a ranch, owner of a ranch, rancher (apparently 18th cent. in this sense), transferred use of ranchero person in charge of a communal meal (1737) < rancho rancho n. + -ero -er suffix1. Compare French ranchero (1838; < Spanish). Compare rancher n.
Esp. in the south-western U.S. and Mexico: a person who farms or works on a ranch; the owner of a ranch; a rancher.
