Etymology: < the name of Grigorij Efimovič Rasputin (?c1865–1916), mystic and influential favourite at the court of Tsar Nicholas II. Compare earlier Rasputinism n.It has frequently been claimed that the mystic's real surname was Novyj or Novyx, and that the name Rasputin, purportedly meaning ‘debauchee, licentious person’, was a derogatory nickname given to him by his enemies. However, the actual Russian word for ‘dissolute person’ is rasputnik, and the association of Rasputin's surname (a relatively common surname in Russia, of uncertain origin, attested from the second half of the 16th cent.) with Russian rasputnyj ‘depraved, licentious, dissolute’ (late 17th cent. in Old Russian) and its derivatives rasputstvo ‘debauchery’ and rasputnik is probably secondary. The exact year of Rasputin's birth is uncertain; estimates in reference works vary from 1864 to 1872, most sources agreeing on c1865. It has recently been suggested that Rasputin was born in 1869, but conclusive evidence for this appears to be lacking. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) also records a pronunciation (ræ·spiutin) /ˈræspjuːtɪn/; in Russian the name is stressed on the second syllable.
