Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Occitan. Etymons: French reseul; Occitan rezol.

Etymology: Probably < a variant of either Middle French, French reseul (c1550; 1397 as roseul denoting a type of garment) or Old Occitan rezol (14th cent.), both denoting réseau work; both words show transferred uses of words denoting a small hunting net, ultimately < classical Latin rētiolum small hunting net (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also hairnet (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine) < rēte net (see rete n.) + -olum -ole suffix¹. With the form in English compare French regional (Brantôme) rezeur, and compare also Middle French raseur net for catching birds (a1397 in an apparently isolated attestation).
