单词 ramshackled
释义

ramshackledadj.

Brit. /ˈramˌʃakld/, U.S. /ˈræmˌʃækəld/
Forms: 1600s ranshacled, 1700s ranshackeld, 1700s ranshackld, 1700s ranshackled, 1800s– ramshackled, 1800s– ranshakelled (English regional (Devon)); Scottish 1800s ramshachled, 1800s ramshackled, 1800s ramsheekled.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ranshackle v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < ranshackle v. (compare forms at that entry) + -ed suffix1, assuming a semantic development (by metaphorization) from ‘ransacked’ to ‘disorderly, chaotic, in disrepair’. Compare later ramshackle adj., ramshackle v. J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Lang. Suppl. (1825) at ramshachled suggests a derivation < Scots ram-, intensifying prefix (see ramfeezled adj.) + shauchle v., but although the prefix may well have influenced the Scots forms of the word with initial ram- , the suggested derivation is unlikely in view of the fact that the earliest forms of the word show initial ran- , and shauchle v. is apparently first attested later. With the Scots form ramshachled perhaps compare camshachle v., which on chronological grounds is equally unlikely to be the etymon of the word.
