Etymology: Variant or alteration of rams n., perhaps after words in -y suffix⁶. The β. forms are apparently developed from the α. forms as an inferred singular (compare β. forms at rams n.), but some examples of the α. forms are construed as plural and others are doubtfully singular or plural, hence making a precise analysis of the relationship between the forms difficult. Compare earlier ramsons n.Slightly earlier currency is perhaps implied by Anglo-Norman ramesee, in the same sense (15th cent.; apparently < Middle English).
