单词 rampallion
释义

rampallionn.

Brit. /ramˈpalɪən/, U.S. /ræmˈpæljən/, /ræmˈpæliən/
Forms: 1500s–1600s rampalion, 1600s (1900s– archaic) rampallion, 1600s– rampallian (now archaic).
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: ramp v.1, rascallion n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < ramp v.1 + -allion (in rascallion n.), perhaps showing alteration of rascallion n. by association with ramp v.1 Perhaps compare later ramscallion n., rapscallion n., tatterdemalion n.With the form rampallian (which is apparently first attested in quot. 1600) compare -ian suffix. A connection between the word and Ram Alley, the name of various streets in London, has been suggested: see further J. H. P. Pafford in Notes & Queries (Mar. 1960) 93/2). However, the street name is apparently first attested later (1611 or earlier), and the early predominance of forms in -ion would suggest that this (and not -ian) was the original form of the ending of the word.
Now archaic and rare.
A ruffian, a villain; a rascal.Chiefly used of a boy or man.
