Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ramonda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ramonda (L. C. M. Richard in C. H. Persoon Synopsis plantarum (1805) I. 216/1) < the name of Louis François Élisabeth Ramond , Baron Carbonièrres (1755–1827), French botanist and traveller + scientific Latin -a -a suffix1 1. Compare French ramondie (1815 or earlier), ramonde (1828 or earlier), and ramonda (19th cent.).With the β forms, compare the slightly earlier scientific Latin Ramondia , proposed as the name of a genus of ferns by C. F. Brisseau de Mirbel ( Bull. des Sci. (Soc. Philomathique) (1801) 179); compare -ia suffix1.
A genus of the family Gesneriaceae comprising three species of perennial herbaceous plants found in mountainous regions of Europe, having a basal rosette of hairy leaves and lilac or violet flowers. Also (in form ramonda): a plant of this genus (also with distinguishing word).
