单词 rara
释义

raran.

Brit. /ˈrɑːrɑː/, U.S. /ˈrɑˌrɑ/
Forms: 1900s– rara, 1900s– ra-ra.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French rara.
Etymology: Probably < Haitian French rara (although this is apparently first attested later: 1954 or earlier), of uncertain origin; probably < Arará group of African peoples from modern-day Benin and their religious traditions, kind of drumming associated with them, ultimately < the name of Allada (see Rada n.2).Alternatively, compare Caribbean English rara child’s rattle, noisy or garrulous person, Caribbean French (St Lucia) roro bacchanal, confusion. Perhaps compare Haitian Creole lalwadi , apparently an earlier name of the festival, of uncertain origin (perhaps < French la loi dit < la , feminine definite article + loi law (see lay n.3) + dit , third singular present indicative of dire to say: see disour n.).
In Haiti: an annual street festival coinciding broadly with Lent, during which processions are held and music is performed. Hence: the music associated with this festival, traditionally played using keyless trumpets, various percussion instruments, whistles, etc., and often featuring subversive or risqué lyrics sung in Haitian Creole. Frequently attributive.
