Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit Rāmāyaṇa.
Etymology: < Sanskrit Rāmāyaṇa, use as noun (short for Rāmāyaṇam ākhyānam narrative relating to Rama) of Rāmāyaṇa relating to Rama (also with vernacular pronunciation Rāmāyaṇ ) < Rāma Rama, the name of a mythic prince (see note at definition) + a suffix expressing relationship. Compare French Ramayana (1705 as Ramayenam in the passage translated in quot. 1714 at α. ).Sanskrit Rāmāyaṇa was later reinterpreted by Indian commentators as well as European scholars as a compound < the name of Rāma + ayana a going. The forms in -am reflect the nominative singular of the Sanskrit neuter noun.
(The name of) one of the two major ancient Hindu epics, written in Sanskrit and ascribed to the poet Valmiki. Cf. Mahabharata n.The poem describes how Rama, aided by his brother Laksmana and the monkey Hanuman, rescued his wife Sita from Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka. The basic story seems to have evolved by c300 b.c.e., but was expanded upon in later centuries. In much of the supplementary text, Rama is represented as an avatar of Vishnu.
