释义 | † ramallingn. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries. The process of preparing kid- or goatskins for the manufacture of chamois leather, by soaking them in an alkaline solution and then scraping the hair off while the skin is held under tension. ΚΠ 1728 E. Chambers Cycl. at Chamois Kid, and Goat-skins..undergo a particular Preparation, call'd Ramalling; the most delicate and difficult of all the others. It consists in this, that as soon as brought from the Mill, they are steep'd in a fit Lixivium; taken out, stretch'd on a round wooden Leg, and the Hair scrap'd off with the Knife; this makes them smooth, and, in working, cast a kind of fine Nap.
