Etymology: In sense 1 < classical Latin rāmus branch (see ramus n.) + -al suffix¹. In sense 2 < ramus n. + -al suffix¹. Compare post-classical Latin ramalis of or belonging to a branch (6th cent.), scientific Latin ramalis of or relating to a ramus (1783 or earlier). Compare earlier rameal adj.

1. Chiefly Botany. Borne directly on a branch; (in figurative context) relating to or of the nature of a branch. Cf. rameal adj. rare.
