Etymology: In α. forms partly < Persian ramażān, and partly < Ottoman Turkish ramażān (Turkish ramazan ); in β. forms < their etymon Arabic ramaḍān. Partly transmitted via other European languages: compare Middle French ramadan (1441 in a text about the Holy Land; French ramadan ), also Middle French ramasan (1542 in a text about Turkey), ramazan (15th cent. in the passage translated in quot. a1500; French †ramazan), Spanish ramadán (early 15th cent.; also cited 1270 as an Arabic word in a Spanish context), Italian ramadan (1422), †ramazan (1573); compare also Dutch Ramadan (1698), German Ramadan (c1693 or earlier).
The ninth month of the year in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims observe strict fasting between dawn and sunset. The lunar calculation of the Islamic calendar brings the fast eleven days earlier each year, so that in a cycle of about thirty-three years it passes through all the seasons successively. Ramadan was also a holy month in earlier Arab tradition, and, according to the solar calculation of the pre-Islamic calendar, would have been uniformly one of the hotter months. In quot. 1822 at β. : any period of abstinence.
