A female salmon, esp. a mature adult bearing roe; (in later use) spec. one which has not spawned at the usual time and is found still carrying roe in spring. ΚΠ 1808 J. Jamieson Etymol. Dict. Sc. Rauner, a name given to the female salmon, i.e. the one which has the roe. 1901 Dundee Advertiser 26 Feb. 6 The fish was found to be unspawned, or what is known on the Tay as a ‘rawner’, and deemed an illegal fish to take. 1937 Scotsman 11 Aug. 13 They are not called autumn fish as on Tweed, but either baggots, from their full appearance, or rawners. 1948 Ecology 29 39/1 Salmon may fail to spawn, as shown by adults found fully mature in the spring and known as baggots or rawners. 1989 R.
