单词 rawn
释义

rawnn.

Brit. /rɔːn/, U.S. /rɔn/, /rɑn/, Scottish English /rɔn/
Forms:

α. late Middle English rawne, late Middle English 1900s– rawn, 1800s– raun (English regional (Yorkshire)); Scottish pre-1700 raune, pre-1700 rawne, pre-1700 1700s–1800s raun, pre-1700 1800s– rawn, 1900s– rawen.

β. English regional (Westmorland) 1700s raan; Scottish pre-1700 rann (perhaps transmission error), pre-1700 raynes (plural, perhaps transmission error), 1700s rand, 1700s– raan (now chiefly Shetland), 1800s– ran, 1900s– raain.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Apparently < an early Scandinavian variant (compare Danish (now regional: chiefly Danish islands) raun , ravn roe (end of the 16th cent.)) of one of the Scandinavian nouns cited at rown n. Compare roan n.3, rown n., and also roe n.2, and see discussion at these entries. With sense 2 (which is unparalleled in the Scandinavian languages) compare earlier rawner n., rown n. 1b.The origin of the β. forms is unclear; perhaps compare the α. forms at prawn n. The form rand shows excrescent -d ; compare β. forms at rown n.
