单词 berbine
释义

berbinen.

Brit. /ˈbəːbiːn/, U.S. /ˈbərˌbin/
Forms: Old English–early Middle English berbene, Old English–Middle English berbena, Old English (1800s– historical) berbine, late Old English berbeana; English regional (Kent) 1700s berbin, 1700s–1800s berbine.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin berbena.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin berbena, variant of classical Latin verbēna verbena n.In Old English the word inflects as a weak feminine (berbēne ) in common with other plant names borrowed from Latin; the unassimilated Latin form berbēna is also attested (with Latin case inflections). It is unclear whether the 18th-cent. English regional forms show this word or the reflex of Middle English verbyn at vervain n. δ. forms, with assimilation of initial v to b (compare γ. forms at verbena n.). In later use in dictionaries and glossaries, probably ultimately after Kennett (see quot. a1728).
Now rare (historical or regional).
Common vervain, Verbena officinalis; = vervain n. 1a.Now chiefly in lists of alternative names for the plant.
