Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin raptatorius.
Etymology: < scientific Latin raptatorius (1825 as a specific name) < classical Latin raptāt- , past participial stem of raptāre to carry away by force (frequentative formation < rapere to seize: see rape v.2) + -ōrius -ory suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin raptator ravisher (4th cent.), scientific Latin Raptatores (see Raptores n.). Compare earlier raptorial adj. and raptorious adj.
