Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Irish raille vagabond, profligate, rake, trickster, of uncertain origin, perhaps itself < an English word (perhaps rail v.⁵; for a possible semantic connection compare Irish roille prattler, apparently originally a variant of raille).

Newfoundland. Now rare (chiefly historical).

A rogue or ruffian; a troublemaker. Winter of the Rals: the winter of 1817–18 (see quot. 1846).
