Etymology: Partly < Malay rakyat (formerly also rayat, ra'yat, raayat, ra'ayat), and partly < Indonesian rakyat, both ultimately < Arabic raʿīya herd, flock, a ruler's subjects (see rayah n.), perhaps partly via Persian raʿīyat (see raiyat n.). Compare earlier raiyat n.

In Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia: ordinary citizens collectively, the common people (as opposed to the government or an elite); (also as a count noun) an ordinary citizen.
