Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymons: Sanskrit rākṣasa, rakṣas, rākṣas.
Etymology: Partly < Sanskrit rakṣas (archaic) demon, and partly < rākṣasa demon (also with vernacular pronunciationrākṣas), use as noun of rākṣasa demoniacal.
Hinduism.
A malignant demon; esp. any of a band of demons at war with Rama and Hanuman; an artistic representation of such a demon. Also in extended use.
