Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: reckon n.1, tie n.
Etymology: < reckon n.1 + tie n.In Old English usually a strong feminine (racentēag , also racentēah ); a weak feminine by-form (racentēage ) is also attested. By the end of the Middle English period the second element of the compound had apparently become obscured and was liable to reanalysis and alteration by folk etymology. The γ. forms are perhaps alterations after tine n.1; the δ. forms perhaps alterations after tail n.1 The ε. forms probably exemplify the sporadic dialectal substitution of a voiceless dental fricative for a voiceless palatal fricative (see E. J. Dobson Eng. Pronunc. 1500–1700 (ed. 2, 1968) I. 181–2); in form rakentothe apparently an alteration after tooth n.
Obsolete.
A chain. In later use spec. one from which cooking vessels may be suspended over a fire. Cf. reckon n.1
