Etymology: As adverb and adjective < Italian rapido rapid adj. As noun, partly < Italian rapido express train (1931; compare earlier rapidissimo (noun) in this sense (1895); use as noun (perhaps short for treno rapido ) of rapido rapid adj.), and partly < Spanish rápido express train (1884 or earlier); compare rapide n.
