Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin ratihabit-, past participial stem of ratihabere to ratify, confirm (in an undated text in Du Cange; 13th cent. in a British source as ratihibere ; < classical Latin ratus confirmed (see rate adj.1) + habēre to have: see habit n.), or a back-formation < either ratihabition n. or ratihabitation n.
Scots Law. Obsolete.
transitive. To express approval of, to sanction (esp. a criminal act or a person guilty of such an act).
