Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French râtelier.
Etymology: < French râtelier rack, stand (13th cent. in Old French as rastelier ), stand for arms (c1426), set of teeth (a1590), set of false teeth (1869; 1718 in rastelier de fausses dents ) < râtel rastel n. + -ier -ier suffix.An earlier example of the word (in the sense ‘rack, stand’) may perhaps be shown by the following, although the analysis is uncertain:1623 Edinb. Test. LII. f. 72v Tua ratelleres & certane preincaces.
1. A stand for lances or other arms. Obsolete. rare.
