Rajputn.adj.Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit rājaputra. Etymology: < Sanskrit rājaputra (also with vernacular pronunciation rājpūt , perhaps influenced by Hindi pūt son) < rāja- , combining form of rājan king (see raja n.1) + putra son, of uncertain origin. Compare French †ragipou (1676 in the passage translated in quot. 1678 at sense A.γ. ), †rajapou , †rasbout (both 1746), †rajepoute (1780), rajpout (19th cent. or earlier), Portuguese resbuto (1516), reisbuto (?1533 as reysbuuto , perhaps influenced by rei , †rey king: see roy n.2), †ragibuto (1635), raiputo , rajaputro (17th cent.), Dutch resbuten , plural (1648 or earlier; apparently < Portuguese; earlier in unassimilated form reijsbutos (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598)); also Indian Persian rājpūt (a1627 or earlier), Ottoman Turkish rāšbūt (16th cent.).
