Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi rāytā.
Etymology: < Hindi rāytā < rāī mustard ( < Sanskrit rājikā) + a second element of uncertain origin.The form rayita may be an attempt to illustrate the pronunciation of the long diphthong in Hindi; it does not represent a trisyllabic pronunciation in English.
South Asian. Cookery.
A cold side dish consisting of yogurt or (esp. formerly) curds with herbs or spices (traditionally including mustard seed), and typically also containing finely chopped vegetables or fruit.
