Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French rapidité; Latin rapiditāt-, rapiditās.
Etymology: < Middle French, French rapidité speed of movement (1573), shortness of time elapsed (1575) and its etymon classical Latin rapiditāt-, rapiditās swiftness < rapidus rapid adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix).
1. As a mass noun: the quality of being rapid; swiftness of movement, action, etc.; speed; velocity.
