Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French rapacité; Latin rapācitāt-, rapācitās.
Etymology: < Middle French rapacité eagerness to fall upon one's prey (1466; 1374 in sense ‘eagerness to serve for the good of others’; French rapacité ) or its etymon classical Latin rapācitāt-, rapācitās rapacious behaviour or tendency, greed < rapāci- , rapāx (see rapacious adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Old Occitan rapacitat (14th cent.), Catalan rapacitat (15th cent.), Spanish rapacidad (1490; 1385 as rapaçidat), Portuguese rapacidade (1692), Italian rapacità (a1320).
