Etymology: < rain n.1 + fall n.2 With senses 2 and 3 compare Dutch regenval (late 19th cent.; mid 17th cent. in extended use with reference to a shower of ashes), Middle Low German (rare) rēgenval, Danish regnfald (a1808), Swedish rägnfall, (now usually) regnfall (1682).
1. A type of firework which produces a shower of sparks. Cf. rain n.1 5. Obsolete. rare.
