Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to West Frisian reindrup , Middle Dutch rēgendrop (in Teuthonista (1477); Dutch (now chiefly literary) regendrop ; the usual word is regendruppel ), Middle Low German rēgendroppe , Old High German regentropho (Middle High German regentrophe , German Regentropfen ), Old Swedish räghndrupi (Swedish regndroppe ) < the Germanic base of rain n.1 + the Germanic base of drop n. In sense 2b after classical Latin stillicidium stillicidium n.; compare earlier stillicide n. 2, stillicidium n. 1.Compare also rain's drop, attested in Old English and early Middle English:OE tr.
