Etymology: < French ravalement (1718; earlier in sense ‘action of debasing’ (1460 in Middle French)) < ravaler to bring down (see ravalling n.) + -ment -ment suffix.The French phrase à ravalement is particularly associated with A. Bemetzrieder Leçons de clavecin (1771) i. 13.
