Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Aramaic. Partly a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Aramaic raḇ; Yiddish rav, rov.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Aramaic raḇ lord, master, teacher, (specifically) title given to the Babylonian Amoraim, use as noun of raḇ much, many, great ( < rāḇaḇ to be or become many or much, to be or become great). In sense 2 < Yiddish rav, (in Ashkenazic pronunciation) rov < post-biblical Hebrew raḇ title given to the Babylonian Amoraim, then to Jewish religious scholars in general, in later use also as a title of respect and form of address preceding a personal name < Aramaic raḇ . Compare biblical Hebrew raḇ lord, chief, use as noun of raḇ much, many, great ( < rāḇaḇ to be or become many or much, to be or become great). Compare earlier rabbi n.1, rabbin n., and also reb n.1, rebbe n.
