Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ratoun and Old French, Middle French raton rat, small rat (13th cent.) < rat rat n.1 + -on -oon suffix. Compare post-classical Latin raton- , rato (frequently from c1250 in British sources), Old Occitan raton , Spanish raton (13th cent). Compare rottan n.Apparently attested earlier as a surname (e.g. Radulphus Ratun (1275)), although this may show the Anglo-Norman word.
Now Scottish, Irish English (northern), and English regional (northern).
