Etymology: < rail n.2 + bird n.In sense 1 after French oiseau des barrières (1779 in the source translated in quot. 1793). In sense 2 perhaps partly with allusion to railbird n.1, although compare bird n. 11.
1. A tropical American cuckoo, probably the striped cuckoo, Tapera naevia. Obsolete. rare.
