Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu rāhdār; Persian rāhdār.
Etymology: < Urdu rāhdār and its etymon Persian rāhdār person who has charge of roads < rāh road + -dār-dar suffix.Sense 1 is not paralleled in Persian or Urdu and probably reflects a transferred use of sense 2. With the terminology for this sense in Persian and Urdu compare rahdari n.
