Etymology: < Middle French, French rabbin rabbi (1540; 1351 as rabain ), ultimately < post-biblical Hebrew rabbī rabbi n.¹; the final -n in French (and likewise in post-classical Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian: see forms below) may reflect either Aramaic rabbīn , plural of rabb master, or suffix substitution (compare -ine suffix⁴), or perhaps analogy with the usual correspondence of a final stressed vowel in Occitan and Catalan (see forms at rabbi n.¹) with a final -n in other Romance languages.
