Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French québécois.
Etymology: < French québécois (1754 as noun and adjective; apparently only from 1966 denoting the variety of French spoken in Quebec) < Québec (see Quebec n.) + -ois (see -ese suffix).The corresponding French feminine form is also sometimes found denoting a woman from Quebec:1981 T. Heald Murder at Moose Jaw iv. 32 He..tried to visualise the petite Quebecoise who had accosted him that morning. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the unassimilated pronunciation (kebękwa) /kebɛkwa/.
