单词 qursh
释义

qurshn.

Brit. /kʊəʃ/, /kəːʃ/, U.S. /kʊ(ə)rʃ/, /kərʃ/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms: 1700s croush, 1700s cursh, 1800s– girsh, 1800s– kirsh, 1900s– ghirsh, 1900s– qirsh, 1900s– qursh.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Arabic qirš, ġirš.
Etymology: < Arabic qirš, qurš (also ġirš, ġurš), inferred singulars of qurūš small silver coin, piastre < Ottoman Turkish quruš , guruš kurus n. Compare groat n., groschen n., gross n.2The Ottoman Turkish words were written with the letter wāw to indicate that both vowels in each word were short u . Arabs read the second vowel as ū , interpreting the words as broken plurals, whence the inferred singulars. The forms with initial c- , k- reflect early attempts at transliterating the Arabic word; the form ckirsh in quot. 1836 is a typographical error. The form girsh (used in quot. 1962 to denote a monetary unit in Saudi Arabia) reflects the pronunciation of the word in parts of North Africa and of the Arabian peninsula; compare e.g. Yemeni Arabic girš (plural gurūš).
Originally: a silver coin of various Middle-Eastern countries. Now: a monetary unit of Saudi Arabia equal to one-twentieth of a rial. Cf. kurus n.
