Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic qur'ān.

Etymology: < Arabic qur'ān, literally ‘recitation’ < qara'a to read, apparently after Aramaic (Syriac) qeryānā reading, scripture. Compare earlier Koran n. and Alcoran n., and the discussion of transliteration of forms from Semitic languages at Q n.

The sacred book of Islam, the word of God as revealed to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel over a period of years, written down in Arabic, and collected together after Muhammad's death; (also) a copy of this.
