Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rafflesia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rafflesia (R. Brown 1822: see quot. 1822) < the name of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781–1826), British governor of Sumatra, who first described the plant (compare quot. 1818) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. A genus of stemless, leafless plants of the family Rafflesiaceae, of South-East Asia, which are parasitic on vines of the genus Tetrastigma and are remarkable for their enormous single flower and carrion-like scent; (also rafflesia) a plant of this genus.
