单词 raffle ant
释义

raffle antn.

Brit. /ˈrafl ˌant/, U.S. /ˈræf(ə)l ˌænt/, Caribbean English /ˈraflɪn/
Forms: 1700s Raffles' ant, 1800s rifle ant, 1800s– raffle ant.
Origin: Apparently from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Raffle , Raffles , ant n.1
Etymology: Apparently < the name of Thomas Raffle or Raffles, a planter who supposedly introduced this ant to Jamaica from Cuba in c1762 (compare quot. 1793) + ant n.1In form rifle ant perhaps influenced by rifle v.1, which N.E.D. (1903) tentatively suggested as etymon of the first part of the compound; however, this is unlikely, as the form is not the earliest one, and is labelled ‘erroneous’ by F. G. Cassidy & R. B. Le Page Dict. Jamaican Eng. (1967) at rifle ant.
Caribbean. Now historical.
A kind of predatory ant which is said to have been introduced into Jamaica to control pests in sugar cane plantations, and later to have become a pest itself. There is confusion concerning the ant's identity, and some doubt as to whether it was genuinely an introduced species. Linnaeus's name Formica omnivora (mentioned in quot. 1793) was used differently by various authors, and cannot now be assigned to an identifiable species. Later writers on the ‘raffle ant’ generally consider it to have been a species of Prenolepis or Paratrechina. Reports of its preying on rats may perhaps reflect popular confusion with a fire ant (genus Solenopsis).
