Etymology: < rae n. + band n.1 Compare Middle Dutch rābant (Dutch raband ), Middle Low German rābant , German Rahband (1811 or earlier), Icelandic rábönd (compare Old Icelandic rábenda to bend a sail, to make (a sail) fast to the yard), Swedish råband (1543), early modern Danish raabond (Danish råbånd ). Compare earlier roband n., rae-bend at rae n. Compounds, and also robbin n.French raban (1573) is < Middle Dutch. Sc. National Dict. (at Rae) records the word as still in use in Shetland and Caithness in 1967.
