单词 radius vector
释义

radius vectorn.

Brit. /ˈreɪdɪəs ˌvɛktə/, U.S. /ˈreɪdiəs ˌvɛktər/
Inflections: Plural radii vectores Brit. /ˌreɪdɪʌɪ vɛkˈtɔːriːz/, U.S. /ˌreɪdiaɪ ˌvɛkˈtɔriz/, radius vectors.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin radius vector.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin radius vector (1705 or earlier in an astronomical context; see also note below) < radius radius n. + vector , use as adjective of classical Latin vector vector n. Compare French rayon vecteur (1739 in the passage translated in quot. 1740).In spite of the reference to Johannes Kepler in quot. 1740, Kepler does not appear to use the post-classical Latin term in his writings, e.g. Astronomia nova (1609) (where he first formulated what later became known as Kepler's Second Law) or Harmonice Mundi (1619). In plural form radii vectores after the Latin plural form.
(a) Mathematics. A straight line drawn to a curve from a fixed point and thought of as turning about the fixed point as the point moves along the curve. (b) Astronomy. Such a line joining an orbiting body to its primary. Cf. vector radius at vector n. 1.
