单词 quoniam
释义

quoniamn.

Brit. /ˈkwəʊnɪam/, U.S. /ˈkwoʊniˌæm/
Forms: Middle English quonyam, 1500s quoman (Scottish, transmission error), 1600s 1900s– quoniam.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French quoniam; Latin quoniam.
Etymology: < Middle French quoniam (c1380 in this sense) or its etymon post-classical Latin quoniam (late 12th cent. in a British source; c1290 in the Lamentationes Matheoluli: see note) < classical Latin quoniam seeing that, inasmuch as < quom , variant of cum when (see when adv.) + iam now ( < the same base as is , id he, it: see id n.3). Compare earlier quaint n.1This use of Latin quoniam may originate in a punning reference to the first line of Psalm 146: Laudate Dominum, quoniam bonus est psalmus ‘Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God’ (R. S. V.), although this is far from certain. In sense 2 apparently with punning reference to sense 1.
